Knoxville is the third largest city in the State of Tennessee and the largest in the eastern region of the state. The city is located in a broad valley between the Cumberland Mountains to the northwest and the Great Smokey Mountains to the southeast. The city was named in honor of the United States' first Secretary of War, Henry Knox.

Knoxville was originally the capital of Tennessee when the state first entered the Union in 1796. It remained its capital until 1819.

Knoxville's economy is centered around the University of Tennessee, The Tennessee Valley Authority, and the government laboratories in nearby Oak Ridge.
